Two Converts!

The fashion show & scarf-a-thon went great! My mom & a few other friends stopped by to support the event. Mom decided that after a (::::mumbling how many years::::::) break, she's decided to knit again! I had been telling her how much better it was than when she & I learned to knit: the needles are bigger...the yarn is better....So after much urging, she decided to try again, and was off and knitting in a matter of minutes! She did two rows that I saw & they were great!

Then one of the other friends who dropped by was so inspired, she decided to learn how to knit too!

Two of the 'tweens from my Friday class came to support the event as well. Both wanted to make something for family friends with cancer. It was thrilling to see them so into a charitable event like this!

The garments in the fashion show were luscious, and the staff had a blast modeling them. The customers seemed to have a great time too! So many donated chemo caps & scarves!

Simply put, a banner day! Woooohooo ::::Happy Dance::::::

Fashion Show!

I manage the education department & charitable events for the LYS I work at. For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are having several events, the culimation of which are the 24-hour "Chemo Cap & Scarf-A-Thon" and Benefit Fashion Show.

I made & will model this ruffled scarf, designed by Valentina Devine.

Oprah, Baby!

I coordinate the charitable efforts at the LYS I work at. The owner of our shop wrote to Oprah's Angel Network about donating yarn & needles to those in shelters due to Katrina. Knititng is so relaxing and theraputic that if I just suddenly lost all connection to my craft, I would be bereft.
Oprah's office called yesterday and stated that the biggest need they have right now is getting knitted & crocheted items for the homes buing re-built in the area. They need pillows, rugs, curtains, placemats, rugs, potholders...anything knitted/crocheted that could be used to cozy up a home!

If you or your group have an interest in taking this on as a project, send a private message & I will contact you with the info.

Yarn Acquired: Let the Knitting Begin!

Got the Blue Sky Organic Cotton in color 85 today & officially got the Mistake Rib Sweater underway! I modified a bit to obtain gauge. Here is a pic of the sweater on the only size 8's I could find that were not being used! Sadly, the photo does not do the color justice.

Stop the Presses!

Whoa Nelly, Eureka and all that jazz! I have found the yarn! Mathophobe that I am, I don't want to have to recalculate the Lucky pattern for Calmer. We got our new shipment from Blue Sky Alpacas yesterday & there is a spanking brand new color (so new it's not even on their website yet!) It is basically a plied combo of their organic cotton in Bone & Sage (heathery, speckled-ish). It's the perfect gauge and it is gorgeous!!!

No! No More!

Arrrggh!! I'm in love...again! Just when I was actually starting to clear projects off of my UFO list and onto my FO list, along comes another project for me to love! Ugh! I don't have room on my list for more stuff! If I knit from right now until the day I die, could I realistically finish all the projects I have loved like this?

So what has me consumed this time? The Lucky sweater (dumb name, awesome project!) at knitty.com! Though I (think I) am a thoroughly hip forty-something, I often find knitty a litte too trendy, and a little too overdone (in that so many people are doing the projects...ala the infamous clapotis). I want to be fairly unique, original, cutting edge, but not so trendy that what I make will be out of style next season (I only made one poncho, and even that was done grudgingly). So though I hear the raves about knitty, I've yet to really jump onto the bandwagon....until now!

Anyhoo, I am using the sage green (they say Khaki...huh??) Calmer from Rowan. I am loving this!!

Kitty Knitting...

Oooookay, I will confess that I thought that people who knitted for their pets (particualrly those who used their pets hair to do it!!) were a little odd. So here I am, several weeks after the "Great Kitty Rescue of '05" smitten with a kitten and knitting for her!

After my hand-dying fiasco, I let the yarns sit around, since I wasn't sure what to use them on or if they would ever stop smelling like wet animal hair, (which surprisingly, they just happen to be!!!). So I decided to combine the wool I hand-dyed with some pink Iceland given to me by the fabulous Susan, owner of Crystal Palace Yarns when I went on my field trip & tour earlier this year.

So far, I love the effect. I plan to finish it & felt it. Catherine loves it, too...playing with it, jumping on it & generally trying to sneak it out of my basket every chance she gets! Only the hand-dyed...none of the other yarns she could go after, so either it has a "secret, residual stink" from the dying process, or she just really loves the yarn, in which case, I chose just the right recipient. Maybe the yarn was just waiting for her to come into our lives?

You, too, can be a kitty knitter...opportunities abound! Vive la difference!
